STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) -

After being open for less than a month, a new self-service food pantry in downtown Staunton is proving useful.

A post on Facebook said the food pantry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church was depleted and restocked multiple times in its first week and could use non-perishable food donations:

We need the help of our congregation to keep this stocked. Several of us have contributed several times in the last week and realize that the food goes quickly!! Please place non-perishable food items in the box whenever and as often as you can. Items can include: canned food with pop-top lids such as Vienna sausages, canned vegetables, ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, etc. Peanut butter also seems to be popular. Other suggestions: cereal, snacks such as nuts, nabs, dried fruits (raisins, cranberries). Include whatever you feel is quick and simple for folks who are hungry. Personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. are also welcome.

The message was also an invitation to anyone who is in need that the food is free and always available.

The pantry is right by the front steps of Emmanuel Episcopal Church on the corner of Frederick Street and Washington Street.
