ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

Albemarle County fire crews are investigating what caused a fire alarm to go off at an retirement community.

Emergency responders were called to the Independence Living Community in the 300 block of Portico Way just before 10 p.m. Sunday, March 11, for an alarm activation.

Once on scene, firefighters say they smelled something burning and evacuated the building.

Residents say they heard what sounded like a loud explosion before the fire alarm went off.

“We've had crews searching the building. We did not find any fire, however a sprinkler did activate and so there are three units that are damaged because of that,” said Dustin Lang, assistant fire chief.

The scene was eventually cleared and people were allowed back inside.
