Video of local man saving alligator goes viralPosted: Updated:
What would you do if you came face to face with an alligator?
One Lee County man is sharing what he did in a viral video that’s making its way around the internet.
Michael Stauffer was leaving his home in Bokeelia on Thanksgiving to enjoy some turkey with his family when he spotted a creature in the grass that caught his eye.
It was an alligator in distress.
“With all the cuts and everything, I think it probably would've died,” Stauffer explained.
The gator was stuck in plastic and struggling to survive.
“I'll never have the chance again, so I’m not gonna let the thing die,” Stauffer said.
The near six-foot gator was standing between Stauffer and his Thanksgiving dinner.
“I was totally, had my game face on,” Stauffer recalled as he watched the video.
In the video, you can see Stauffer using a broom and blanket to secure the gator, and safely wrestle it, rescuing it off the street.
“I've never done that before with an alligator before ever,” Stauffer said.
Stauffer then called the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation to grab the gator from his truck.
Stauffer tore his meniscus during the catch, which he said is a reminder for everyone that things could have ended a whole lot worse.
Stauffer said the experience was one he’ll never forget, and certainly doesn’t regret.
FWC said to call the FWC alligator hotline if something similar happens to you, so they can relocate the gator safely.
