'Secret Sister Gift Exchange' on Facebook is a scam
The Better Business Bureau has a warning about a scam that you’ll see on Facebook called the Secret Sister Gift Exchange, and it acts as a “chain letter”.
It says if you buy and send a gift for $10, you'll receive as many as 36 gifts in return. A similar scam involves a wine exchange.
It asks you to tag six of your closest friends, and post your home address is the comments.
That request is a red flag, according to the Better Business Bureau. The agency warns it's actually an illegal pyramid scheme. And in most cases participants don't get gifts in return, but end up losing money.
“Delete the post, flag it for Facebook to see, ignore it. Do not respond,” said spokesman Stephen Mayer. “Do not ever post that personal information on social media, because even if you have your privacy settings checked, and think only your friends can see that, you still don’t quite know who has access to that information.”
