CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, November 13, 2017 – More than 800 residents from Charlottesville and Albemarle County joined the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease on October 28 at IX Art Park in Charlottesville. Over 1,000 participants were registered for the walk and raised more than $211,000 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.

“The support shown by the Charlottesville area makes our educational and activity programming possible. Support groups, Memory Cafes, caregiver education and brain health tips are all provided by your generous support. Reaching the goal means more of your friends and family will nont have to deal with Alzheimer's alone... they can rely on the Alzheimer's Association," said Sue Friedman, Alzheimer’s Association Central & Western Virginia chapter president & CEO.

Team Brannock was the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising $38,636.39. Tommy & Lori Brannock were the top individual fundraisers.

Major sponsors of the walk included Commonwealth Senior Living, Our Lady of Peace, Brown Toyota, Legacy Hospice, Morningside and Worldstrides.

In Virginia alone, there are more than 140,000 people living with the disease and 458,000 caregivers. In the United States, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
