Memorial to Enslaved Laborers Approved at the University of VirginiaPosted: Updated:
The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors Building and Grounds Committee approved the design and location for a memorial to enslaved laborers Friday.
The memorial will be constructed in an open green area east of Brooks Hall and across from the Corner.
At Friday’s meeting, people saw renderings of what the memorial might look like.
Freedom Ring will feature names of enslaved laborers who worked at the university and a stone bench where visitors can sit and reflect.
The design comes after months of research and meetings with the public.
