After days of shopping in stores and online, Tuesday is all about giving back to others. Nonprofits and charities across Charlottesville are asking for your help to raise money on what is called Giving Tuesday.

Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, Building Goodness Foundation, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge are among those asking for online monetary donations, but say if you can't donate, there are still other ways to help.

"You can give items. Right now we have a need for wet food and fleece blankets when it's cold out. And a lot of people don't think of this, but when we have more blankets, we need more laundry detergent,” Whitney Kenerly at the CASPCA said.

You can also foster an animal to help keep the CASPCA a no kill shelter.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge pairs mentors with children in the community.

"We make that one-to-one commitment that we don't see anywhere else in the city, you know that any child that comes in our program is given one-to-one time every single week for at least a year and that makes a difference,” Athena Gould, executive director at BBBS said.

BGF volunteers build and renovate schools, homes and clinics for communities in need here and abroad. Volunteers will be building homes next month in Haiti after it was hit by Hurricane Matthew

“Our first homes will be built, actually we're building 5 new homes in a little village called Destra before the end of the year, so there will be families who live in homes whose homes were destroyed,” Allison Scholl at BGF said.

The money you donate to BGF helps fund supplies and get volunteers on the ground.

These are just three out of many organizations in Charlottesville participating in Giving Tuesday. If you want to donate, we have the links to the websites here.
