GREENE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

A family in Greene County is bringing back an 18-year-old holiday tradition with their two-acre light display on Matthew Mill Road in Ruckersville.

The Perkins family has been hanging Christmas lights in their yard for years. Ginny and James Perkins made the decision to not put up their light show for a few years because of James' worsening bone cancer. But, this year, the family decided the show must go on, even after James was killed in a car accident last month.

"This is a memorial to my father James P. Perkins," Tammy Perkins said. "We knew that no matter what we were going to have dad's lights turned on."

More than half a million lights are all controlled by one light switch, and it’s no small task.

"Starting on January 15th this year my mother started working on the lights, every single day,” Tammy Perkins said.

The family first hung lights around their property on Matthew Mill Road in 1998. Tammy Perkins says she pretended to be a tourist to get people into the yard.

"We would drive through our own lot and look at our lights and people would follow so each year we decided to add more and more and more and more,” Tammy Perkins said.

Now all those lights are a major attraction in the Ruckersville community. Tammy Perkins says people have traveled from all over to catch a glimpse of what makes it so special.

"Every single person, once they get here they've never left here not happy...everybody says you can’t believe it until you see it," Tammy Perkins said.

The lights will be up every night through Jan. 3 with free food and gospel music on Friday and Saturday nights.
