Offensive Line Leads Riverheads into VHSL Quarterfinals
The Gladiators have a veteran offensive line
Senior running back Brett Hostetler
STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) -
The Riverheads football team is playing in the quarterfinals of the state tournament for the 5th time in the last seven seasons.
The Gladiators have a formula for success, and they stick with it, handing the ball to running backs like Brett Hostetler and Harrison Schaefer on almost every play.
Head coach Robert Casto says, "We have a lot of backs that run the football. It all starts up front. Our offensive lineman have really dedicated themselves this year. They've worked hard, and they've stayed healthy."
That offensive line has been together for the last two seasons, and they get better as the game progresses.
"We don't play our offensive lineman on defense," says Casto. "They just play one way, and usually by the end of the game, they're still pretty fresh."
The Gladiators defense pitched a shutout in their second-round win against Essex.
Casto says, "They were all over the field, and anytime you shut out a team in the playoffs, it's certainly a good night out."
Riverheads will need another strong defensive effort Friday night, as they host a Colonial Beach team that has scored at least 40-points in each of its last four games.
Casto says, "They're precise in what they do. Running the single wing, you have to stay home and read your keys. They have athletes that can really go. They have some burners."
The Gladiators will have the advantage of playing in front of their home crowd.
"We love playing here," says Casto. "We've said all along, we'll play in the parking lot if we need to. We just happen to be at home, and we're going to take it.
Kickoff is Friday night at seven o'clock.
