Ron Jasper Formally Sentenced for Murder from September 2015
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -
On Tuesday, an Albemarle County judge upheld a jury recommended sentence in a murder from last September.
Ron Jasper was formally sentenced giving him all 23-years in prison.
The case was complex dealing with two sets of twins and jasper's wife caught in-between. NBC29 heard from several of Ron Jasper's family members including his mother.
They all said he is caring and supportive. One of Jasper's neighbors described him as a laid back person who was quiet. The 30-year-old was sentenced to twenty years for first-degree murder and three years on a firearms charge.
In June, a jury recommended that 23-year prison sentence, a minimum sentence allowed by law.
Jasper shot and killed 26-year-old Rahsaan Reid during a confrontation at the Cavalier Crossing apartment complex last September. Reid and his twin brother lived there, and Jasper's wife was living with Reid's twin brother.
An upstairs neighbor caught the shooting on cell phone video.
During the trial the defense built the argument that due to a kidney disease, Jasper would be physically unable to defend himself against an attack from Reid, who had a knife, and on Tuesday Jasper’s attorney says his client needs a kidney due to disease. The incarceration takes Jasper off the National Donor List, and with sentencing over, he now has the right to appeal the conviction.
