A central Virginia nonprofit, founded by a young student, is making sure hundreds of students are ready to go back to school.

On Tuesday Backpack Buddies of central Virginia packed backpacks full of school supplies.

Lucia Hoerr founded the organization in 2010 using her allowance money and donations to fill a few dozen backpacks for children at the Boys and Girls Club in Charlottesville.

“She's doing it all on her own. We honestly don't help her at all. We're really proud of what she's turned this into. It's remarkable,” said Carter Hoerr, Lucia's father.

Six years later, Backpack Buddies is now a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit, and a full time job for Lucia.

“I didn't think it was going to be this much and this long. But the first year, walking into the boys and girls club and seeing all those kids getting the backpacks are smiling, and saying it's the backpack girl, it's the backpack girl,” said Lucia Hoerr.

Backpack Buddies goal this year is to fill 425 backpacks. Luca Hoerr and her volunteers will deliver them to the Charlottesville Boys and Girls Club Wednesday.
