AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

Students and supporters of Sweet Briar College (SBC) are celebrating its future, one year after the school nearly shut down.

The Amherst County college kicked-off Sweet Briar Forever Month this week.

The college's former president and board announced on March 3, 2015, their plans to close the school, citing declining enrollment and funds.

Students and alumnae rallied to save SBC.

The college's new president, Phillip Stone, says that support needs to continue.

“It is a time for us to be very focused on raising the money to not only cover this year's budget but to make sure we build a more sustainable infrastructure and foundation for the coming years,” Stone said.

A Day of Giving on Thursday raised more than $512,000 for Sweet Briar. The college's goal is to raise $1 million by Thursday, March 10.

President Stone also says the college has received the largest number of applications in Sweet Briar's history.
