CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

Saint Anne's-Belfield student Anthony Gonnella has signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gonnella will join his brother Joseph Gonnella who is currently a freshman on VCU's soccer team.

"I'm probably going to redshirt at VCU because VCU is a division I program," says Gonnella. "They're really good. Right now, I'm excited to sign at VCU and play some soccer with my brother hopefully."

Gonnella was recruited by the Rams, while playing for Academy team Richmond United. As a defensive mid-fielder, Gonnella played a key role in helping Richmond United finish as wildcard playoff team in the Academy standings this past fall.

Gonnella began his soccer playing career at five-years old and played locally for SOCA and for the State ODP team.
