CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
Police are investigating a bank robbery that occurred on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall Monday morning.
According to police, Union Bank & Trust on 400 East Main St was robbed by a white male suspect at 10:58 a.m.
According to investigators, the suspect is in his late 20's, was wearing what looked like pantyhose over his face, dark jacket, and described as having a knife on his hip.
An employee at My Chocolate Shoppe described the experience.
"I had just opened the store and was walking back over to here and I saw these cops running past the windows with their guns drawn and I'm like oh my gosh, and I hear on the radio they're looking for some suspect, cause you can hear their radios. And I immediately ran over to the window and I'm like do I lock the door? Are we on lockdown? What's going on?" said Mary Shellhammer.
Police say witnesses interviewed say they saw the man go toward the Belmont area, and told the police the suspect was smoking in front of the bank before he robbed it.
Forensic detectives combed through trash in cans right in front of the bank as well as collected cigarette butts on the sidewalk after the incident.
In a statement issued from bank Spokesman Bill Cimino, he writes:
"Everyone that worked at the bank downtown is okay. Tellers are very shaken up. Never a fun experience to have happen. Everyone there is working with authorities to help investigation and at this time no person working today will be talking with media. Branch is still closed for the day."
The bank gave an undisclosed amount to the suspect after he demanded money. His face was caught on surveillance video. The bank says they will be open for business on Tuesday for normal business hours.
If you have any information regarding the situation police ask that you call Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.
