Girls from all walks of life put their endurance to the test Sunday afternoon at the Girls on the Run 5K race hosted by Saint Anne’s Belfield School in Albemarle County.
Over 100 students from third grade through eighth grade took part in the event and everyone who crossed the finish line earned a medal.
Girls on the Run of Central Virginia is a nonprofit youth development program that teaches girls life management skills as well as how to take care of their bodies.
"We're using physical activity to help the girls use it as another tool, not just the vocali-verbalizing skills, but also using running to clear their heads, if they have an issue that they need to work through that you can go out take a walk or a run and work through that issue, figure out some of the solutions," said Mary Hansen of Girls on the Run.
The run has been held at Sweet Briar College in the past but organizers hope to make it a tradition in Charlottesville.
