Charlottesville students served up recipes fresh from their school's backyard garden Wednesday.

Buford Middle School students sampled vegetable pizza squares and vegetable fried rice during lunchtime Wednesday. A team of students developed the recipes using carrots, which were grown in Buford's garden.

All 500 middle school students got to vote for their favorite dish during  Wednesday's "VegOff" competition.

“It's weird, because I never had veggie fried rice. It's different textures, but it was OK I guess. It was pretty good,” said Zyahna Bryant, an eighth-grade student.

“It really creates more of a connection between understanding what the crop is and growing it and then knowing how to prepare it,” Jeanette Abi-Nader, City Schoolyard Garden executive director.

Whole Foods will prepare the winning recipe for the Buford Middle School's Harvest Festival. The festival is open to the community Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
