You have the chance to meet some of central Virginia's finest canines this weekend. Service Dogs of Virginia is holding an open house to show what some of their special pups in training can do.

Organizers say the event is a great opportunity to learn about the group's mission of helping people with special needs. Attendees will get an in-depth look at how the nonprofit trains its pups from start to finish.

There will be about 10 dogs featured in Sunday's open house. Trainers will lead a live demonstration to showcase some of the skills that the service dogs learn including how to return a dropped item to their owners and how to open doors.

Service Dogs of Virginia plans to start with the puppy group and work all the way up to advanced skills. This is also a chance for the organization to raise money and support for its cause.

Head trainer Lauren Shaw said, “Without the public's support, we can't continue to operate. We are a nonprofit and we do rely on people's knowledge and willingness to donate. So it's really important and it's a great way for us to educate the public who are not familiar with us and spread the word that way.”

The audience will also get to hear from some clients who have a service dog after the demonstrations. The group trains pups in the areas of physical assistance, autism service and diabetic alert.

The open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers suggest arriving early to their site in the Albemarle Square Shopping Center to grab a seat.
