Charlottesville Albemarle Airport officially welcomed a larger Delta plane Wednesday morning.

The Boeing 717 seats more than 100 passengers and replaces a small regional jet that was about half the size. It will be used for a few of the Delta flights to and from Atlanta.

CHO held a passenger appreciation day to celebrate the first Delta Boeing 717 taking off.

“One of the good things about it is we have a very strong market that people are supporting, and that's why we are able to get this larger aircraft. A lot of smaller airports are not able to do that,” said Melinda Crawford, CHO executive director.

This is a trial period for the plane, but if it proves successful, it will be officially put in place at the airport.
