Locust Grove Elementary Settles into Old Middle School
ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -
Hundreds of Orange County elementary students are returning to class in a new place that's a bit old-school.
Locust Grove Elementary School teachers are fixing up their classrooms in what used to be the Locust Grove Middle School. The school board shuttered the building several years ago when it ran out of money to keep it open. Since then, Locust Grove elementary and middle schools shared a building.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors and school board each chipped in $250,000 to reopen the classrooms.
“Over the couple of years, I feel the school board has accomplished a number of great things, but one thing is getting children out of 16 trailers,” said Judy Carter, a member of the Orange County School Board. “We had to go through a few years of things being rough, but they survived. It was still better than being in trailers. Now, we get them back home.”
Head Start classrooms are moving into Locust Grove Elementary School, and the building still has capacity to add students and prevent overcrowding.
School starts in Orange County on Tuesday.
