Albemarle Fire Rescue Holding Community Meeting on EMS Billing Changes

Posted: Updated:

Monday night, Albemarle County Fire Rescue is holding a community information session on changes to the emergency medical services billing program. The meeting is a chance for the public to learn about the cost recovery initiative set to start at two more stations next week.

The county began a program on August 1 that eliminates billing of residents, and only bills their insurance companies and non-county residents for ambulance transport.

On September 1, the Western Albemarle Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Company will begin participating in this effort.

The EMS Cost Recovery Program is a way to offset costs associated with transporting a patient by ambulance. Albemarle County Fire Rescue and the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad are hosting this information session to answer any questions surrounding the EMS billing changes.

This program has been implemented successfully by more than 40 localities and 50 volunteer rescue squads in Virginia. The effort recovers funds to support the increasing costs of providing EMS services to a growing population.

Albemarle Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston said, “It's our initiative to try and get out to the public to have some conversations - public involvement so that people don't feel like they're surprised by the process. It's also important to help them understand how this money is going to be used to further enhance the system.”

Medicaid, Medicare, and most other private insurance policies allow for payment for this service. Starting September 1, a county resident will also not be responsible for co-pays or deductibles.

The meeting will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Crozet Library Meeting Room. Click here for more information on the program.
