The Warriors will have a new starting quarterback in 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
Western Albemarle is coming off back-to-back Jefferson district championships and a 10-2 record.
The team averaged over 39 points per game in 2013.
Head coach Ed Redmond wants his team to be balanced in 2014.
"We'd like to spread the ball out. We'd like to get the ball in space, but we also like to run the power. We feel like we want to cause defense to defend the whole field."
Three of the warriors captains play along the offensive line, which looks to be the strength this year.
Senior middle linebacker Josh Meeks believes that unit can be even better this year.
"We have a lot of returning players along the offensive line. We gelled really good last year and I think this year we're going to step it up a little bit and bring more this year than we did last year."
Western albemarle will enter 2014 with a new face at quarterback with the departure of Kent Henry to the college level.
Despite the loss, Redmond isn't concerned about replacing the three-year starter.
We're asking our guys at the quarterback spot to compete. To lead our offense. To get the ball where it needs to be."
Senior linebacker and offensive guard Logan Sprouse isn't thinking about the players the team lost from last season.
"It doesn't change much for me at all. I don't worry at all about those guys we lost. We lost them. They're good but you lose guys every year. Its just one of those things you got to get over."
Western returns seven starters on defense.
The team runs a 4-4 front, and coach Redmond says the key for success will be contingent on how the big men up front hold up.
"We believe in our defensive front. A lot of those guys I talked about on the offensive side of the ball are going to be our defensive lineman so they got to be in great condition."
Meeks says that the linebackers benefit from having a great defensive line.
"Those seven guys are real key in our defense too and as linebackers we really just back up our great defensive line who do a great job."
Sprouse believes having so many returning starters will really benefit the defense.
"I know I can count on every single one of those guys on the defense. Its just about all getting in the right position. I know all those guys can play out there."
