Move-in Delayed for Tenants of Flats at West Village

Posted: Updated:

Friday was a hectic evening for students moving into the new Flats at West Village on West Main Street in Charlottesville.

Students were told they could begin moving in at 5 p.m., but that got pushed back by about two and a half hours while fire marshals performed their final inspections on the building.

"The fire marshal comes in when you have your final inspections, and they want to check that every exit sign's open. They want to turn the lights out so the lights are not on. People can have the spotlights working so they can get through the stairwells. Every stairwell has to be checked out,” said Ryan Holmes, CEO of Ambling University Development Group, which owns the complex.

The complex did all it could to accommodate its new tenants during the wait. It bought them pizza and even treated them to a free dinner at Wild Wing Cafe.

The new complex features 622 beds and 10,000 square feet of retail space. Finishing touches will be put on the building over the next two weeks.
