Albemarle Families Celebrate at Sixth Back to School Festival

Posted: Updated:

Students in Albemarle County are getting ready to head back to school next week. Families in the Southwood community celebrated the start of another school year Wednesday night.

Hundreds showed up for the sixth annual Back to School Festival. The event gives students an opportunity for a last-minute gathering before hitting the books. There was food, face painting and even a photo booth.

But the main goal is to bring resources to the mostly Hispanic families

"The teachers get to meet the parents and we feel like that's a really crucial piece of information. It's just so important for the parents to get to know the families in order to support learning,” said Gloria Rockhold, community engagement manager for Albemarle County Public Schools.

Service providers like the Charlottesville Free Clinic were at the festival to educate the families about available resources.

School starts next Wednesday.
