After a nearly six-year battle with cancer, a long-time central Virginia law enforcement officer died Tuesday.
Wayne Bettinger began his career with the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office, where he worked for two years. He then spent 16 years with the Charlottesville Police Department.
He was as dedicated to his fight against cancer as he was to his career and to his family. Bettinger traveled to Johns Hopkins just three weeks ago to see what else could be done.
He leaves behind a wife, Cary, and daughter, Morgan.
Bettinger was just 51 years old.
A viewing will be held Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church on Park Street in Charlottesville and a funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m., also at First Baptist. Both events are open to the public.
