Tomato Tasters Rank Tomatoes from Mr. Jefferson Garden

Posted: Updated:

People from all over the commonwealth tasted tomatoes at Monticello on Saturday. Guests got to try many different varieties grown in Thomas Jefferson's gardens.

More than two dozen kinds of tomatoes grow at Monticello each year. Tasters ranked each tomato on a scale of one to 10 from their least to most favorite. The results will be on Monticello's website.

Co-op worker-owner Ira Wallace said, "It's like having a passel of children, I don't have a favorite! If I want a mild one I'll get one of the nice light yellow ones that don't have too much acidity, if I want a really robust flavor, I might get a little something like tropic"

This event was a preview for the tomato tasting that will happen during the Heritage Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 13.

Monticello will host the largest tasting of the year on that day with more than 100 varieties available.
