Augusta County Sheriff's Investigating Armed Robbery in Churchville

Posted: Updated:

The owner of the Churchville Tastee Freeze tells of a frightening scene, a robber held up his employees at gunpoint, getting away with more than $1,000 in cash.

Surveillance video shows the robbery as it happened. Two employees were counting money just behind the counter when the robber walks in, armed with weapons in both hands. Thankfully all of the employees are safe  after the incident.

It began Friday at the Tastee Freeze on Route 42 just before 10 p.m. The store was closed at the time, but the owner says the employees who were closing down hadn't yet locked the doors.

The sheriff's office says the man was armed with a gun in one hand and a large hunting knife in the other. He came in the restaurant's entrance and approached two employees who were counting money in the back.

Tastee Freeze owner Rich Anderson says the man ran off with around $1,400. He says this is the first time anything like this has happened at his restaurant, and he's glad everyone made it out unharmed.

“Money is not a minor issue, we could have used that money to pay some bills, but you can't replace a life and we don't want our employees hurt if we can avoid it. Give the money away,” said Anderson.

Anderson says the Augusta County Sheriff's Office has assured him deputies will be patrolling the area more often.

Investigators are asking for the public's help in catching the robber. If you have any information, you are urged to call the sheriff's office at 540-942-5113.
