Herring Asks for Review of Gay Marriage RulingPosted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a decision that struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage, although he supports the lower court's decision.
Herring filed a petition Friday with the high court.
In a written statement, Herring said he believes the case will prove compelling to the court because of the "stringent, discriminatory nature of Virginia's marriage ban" and other factors. He had said earlier in the week he would seek the court review.
The Democrat has chosen not to defend the state's law, and said he believes the district and appeals courts ruled correctly in striking down the ban.
However, he said it's clear the Supreme Court will have the final word, and he wants that decision as soon as possible.
