Housing Development Approval Impacts Camp Friendship

Staff at a camp next to the Poplar Ridge property in Fluvanna County are speaking out about a Board of Supervisors vote earlier this week.  Now, with a major new housing development set to come in right next door, they worry about safety and disruption. On Wednesday the board green lighted a rezoning that will allow for a projected 317 homes to be built.

Camp Friendship has been a fixture in the county for over 40 years. The camp is tucked in the woods away from Route 15 and hosts hundreds of young campers every year.  Right now, campers as young as 7 years old are allowed to wander the camp freely, and stay in unlocked cabins but that may have to change.

A new special use permit is the first step toward attracting more businesses to the area.  The camp's founder, Chuck Ackenbom, also worries about how the development plans to address water and sewage concerns.

"They start putting in little septic tanks all over the place, you have no idea what kind of control they'll have over that. And these lots, some of them are going to be so small, even their lot is not going to handle what the septic system has to put out, so they're going to have to have some kind of sewage system," he stated.

Camp Friendship currently runs on well water, and the new development would also be tapping into that ground water source, raising more concerns.
