Designers Display Final Plans for West Main

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Plans for the future of West Main Street in Charlottesville were rolled out Tuesday night.

Dozens gathered to see the design plans that include a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly area. The design also recommends zoning changes that would prevent newer buildings from overshadowing older neighborhoods nearby.

Parking and keeping traffic in mind has been a struggle in the design process. The plans keep about two-thirds of the parking spots currently there, but planners say it's a good compromise.

"The big wrestling point has been balancing parking and a need for better bike and pedestrian facilities,” said Jim Tolbert, Charlottesville’s director of neighborhood development. “What we've come up with is a solution that not everybody gets everything they want but nobody gets nothing.”

Planners will take Tuesday night's feedback into consideration before requesting action from City Council.
