Augusta County Fair Kicks off Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - The Augusta County Fair is getting underway at the Augusta Expoland in Fishersville. Organizers are expecting big crowds this week and Tuesday night is the first night of fireworks.

The fair dates back to the Civil War, so it's a big tradition in Augusta.

With a smaller budget, organizers have spent the last year figuring out new ways to put on the event. Even with some budget cuts in recent years, if you're headed down to the expo this week, you can expect a little bit of everything.

“We work very hard at going out and looking for sponsors. It's because of the sponsors that we're able to put the fair on,” said Ellen Shavershank, fair organizer.

There are some new acts this year, like the Extreme Illusions show. “We do some sawing in half, but we also chop my wife in nine pieces,” said Josh Knotts, who performs the show.

Knotts and his wife, Lea, are halfway through a 300-show tour.

“I'm the only guy in the world who can get out of two straight jackets at the same time,” said Knotts.

Inside the expo building, vendors finished setting up on booths for car and art exhibits Tuesday. If those exhibits aren't your style, maybe the racing pigs are.

“That's little pigs that race around their track and they do it for Oreo cookies. They love to race,” said Shavershank.

Vendors will be selling typical carnival foods – and even some with a twist, like Ubon Thai's Thai funnel cake.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says, even though there's a lot of roadwork going on around Exit 91 near the expo, traffic should not be an issue.

The fair begins Tuesday and runs through August 9. For a full schedule of events, click here.
