CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

History buffs can now dig deeper into the events surrounding President Richard Nixon's resignation with new resources from the University of Virginia’s Miller Center.

Next Friday, August 8, marks the 40th anniversary of the historic resignation announcement of our 37th president.

Miller Center researchers say we now know more about the Watergate scandal and Nixon's controversial presidency thanks to a set of secretly recorded tapes.

You can study audio and transcripts of those historical documents - and check out a new book on the topic.

The Miller Center has posted several resources on its website including video from some of Nixon’s key speeches and expert commentary.

This week, researcher Ken Hughes also released his new book "Chasing Shadows: The Nixon Tapes, The Chennault Affair and the Origins of Watergate" to show how the break-in was part of a larger pattern of illegal activity.

Hughes has been studying the Nixon tapes through the Miller Center's Presidential Recordings Program since 1996.

He said, “To a certain extent, Richard Nixon was able to conceal his crimes during his presidency and for the rest of his life, and we're only now learning the full extent of his abuses of power.”

Hughes says secret White House tapes are fascinating because they allow people to see behind the facade some of our nation's leaders were able to maintain in office.

More information on the book is available here.

Downloadable video and transcripts of speeches, including Nixon's August 8, 1974 address to the nation announcing his decision to resign, can be found here.
