Caring For Creatures Animal Shelter Holds First Summer Food Drive

Posted: Updated:

"Hot, happening and hungry" is the slogan the Caring For Creatures animal shelter in Fluvanna County is using to spread the word about its first summer food drive.

The shelter is home to more than 30 dogs and 160 cats. Organizers have partnered with Pet Supplies Plus, Sammy Snacks in Charlottesville and Happy Tails in Palmyra to help cover the shelter's $3,500 monthly food costs.

Customers can visit those retailers and buy discounted items to donate to the food drive.

Caring for Creatures President Mary Birkholz said, "We've gotten about 780 pounds of dry dog food. About 450 pounds of dry cat food. So, we're falling a little short on the canned, but we figure we still have time for July and August, so we're confident we'll be able to meet our goals."

The food drive continues until August 31. The shelter's goal is to raise $7,000 worth of food.
