CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
One central Virginia group is putting on free outdoor performances this summer for families in Charlottesville to enjoy. The Hamner Theater will kick off its "Shakespeare in the Parks" tour Saturday evening.
This is the third year members of the theater have traveled to different venues to present a William Shakespeare play. This season, actors will perform the well-known comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" at five different locations in the city.
The schedule is as follows:
July 26: Carver Recreation Center
July 27: Lee Park
August 1 - 3: Tonsler Park
August 8 - 10: Belmont Park
August 15 - 17: Washington Park
Friday and Saturday shows are set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances begin at 5:00 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to bring picnics, chairs and blankets to the outdoor shows.
Boomie Pedersen, the Hamner Theater’s artistic director, said, “Part of the impulse behind this was to put theater in the community, so the community can just walk down the street and see a play. Walk by, stop in, see a play. Not drive, not worry about parking, not pay for tickets.”
The theater is also planning to stop at Albemarle Ciderworks, Massies Mill and Bellair Farm near Scottsville on this season's tour.
Rain may cancel the outdoor shows. The Hamner Theater will update the latest performance information on its website.
