Hometown Heroes Honored in Charlottesville

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

People who don't always get the recognition they deserve are being honored Friday night.

Allen and Allen announced the statewide Hometown Heroes winners, and a handful of them are from Charlottesville.

One by one the heroes were brought on stage during Fridays After Five, each recognized for different contributions to the community. Jessica Spears, a Burnley-Moran Elementary School teacher, is being recognized for her work promoting healthy lifestyles for students.

"I think there's a lot of influence in the community these days and public schools in general focus a lot on academics and I think it takes an extra effort to make sure kids still pay attention to their bodies,” Spears said.

Another hero is a 13-year-old Charlottesville boy who made it his mission to help the homeless - while battling a heart disease.
