CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Phil Mahone beat Hunter Weaver and Richard Morelle in a three-hole playoff Sunday in the final round of the Charlottesville City Golf Championship at Meadowcreek Golf Course.

Mahone has won the City Championship three times, and has two wins in Battle Trophy competition this year.

"I think if you put yourself in that position enough times, it pays off, and I've been there enough times," says Mahone.  "Sometimes it works out, sometimes, it doesn't, and today it did. This means a lot. I'm really proud of it. I've played in it enough times. Before I won, I finished second four times, at least, so I'm happy."

Weaver took the early lead in the three-hole playoff with a birdie on 16, but he bogeyed 17, while Mahone made birdie to move in front.

Morelle birdied 18, but his bogey on 16 meant he and Weaver finished tied for second behind Mahone.

"I think it was just hanging around, and not giving up," says Mahone. "Staying patient, getting lucky. I had to get lucky. Hunter had to make some mistakes to let me back in it. I know how that feels. When you have a lead like that, and you try to guard it, it's just really hard."

Weaver held a three-shot lead over Morelle heading into the final round, and was five shots in front of Mahone, but struggled on the Back Nine Sunday.

The Orange County alum Weaver shot a 76 on the final day of play, after posting a 68 and a 67 the first two days.

Morelle shot a 73, while Mahone was Even par 71.

Charlie Paschall was the only golf to break par on Sunday, shooting a one-under par 70.
