"Green Grannies" Protest Against Fracking for Natural Gas

Posted: Updated:

Protestors in Charlottesville are sending a message to Washington to ban fracking for natural gas.

These central Virginia activists decided to stay here and save gas, rather than joining a protest in the nation's capital.

Demonstrators gathered on the downtown mall to speak about recent developments in the natural gas industry and their fears of fracking's impact on health, safety, and the environment. The protestors included a group known as the "green grannies".

Green Grannie, Joanie Freeman said, "Well, I’m a grannie, and I’ve got two little granddaughters and I’m concerned for their future and if we don't start taking things in our own hands and beginning to change things around, our future is gonna look very different for our grandchildren.”

These groups have also been leading discussions against dominion's proposed natural gas pipeline that could cut through several counties in central Virginia and the valley.
