Jefferson Vineyards Wins Double Gold Medal for 2013 Viognier

International prestige is on its way to one central Virginia winery.

A double gold medal won by Jefferson Vineyards at a competition of wines from around the world will be delivered to the Albemarle County winery in a few weeks.

Jefferson Vineyards believes its win at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine and Spirits Competition is more than just a win for themselves. They call it a win for Virginia.

Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, Chris Ritzcoda said, “The win is very reassuring that I’m helping to carry on this tradition, at Jefferson Vineyards we have a very strong following for our Viognier and having the Viognier win in an international competition, I think it helps prove that Virginia produces quality wines and that Virginia Viognier is some of the best in the world."

Vineyard Owner Attila Woodward agrees that this award is a win for the region.

"I used to live in San Francisco before I moved here so personally I think this is a great victory for Virginia, as well as for us, for Jefferson vineyards,” said Woodward.

"From an ownership it validates the faith that we have in a great team we have working for us here, and in our winemaker, Chris Ritzcoda "

The 2013 Viognier was the first wine Chris Ritzcoda finished as Jefferson's winemaker last year.

"I think the best part of the process is when it's finally in the bottle and it's done, that's my favorite part,” said Ritzcoda.”

Ritzcoda also explains that wine competitions are judged kind of like dog shows

Each wine tries to meet an ideal of perfection and then they're scored on a numerical scale.
