The 27th annual Charlottesville City Golf Championship will tee off at Meadowcreek Golf Course Friday, as some of the best golfers in the region hit the course for the three day event.

UVa golf coach Bowen Sargent will be back to defend his title.

Sargent won his first City Championship by three strokes last year, and will be looking to become the first player to ever win the tournament in back-to-back years.

Charlottesville Director of Golf Rion Summers says Meadowcreek will look a little different for the returning golfers.

"The golf course is a little bit longer than some of the participants are used to playing," says Summers.  "Hole #1 is now a Par 4, so we've changed they way the course is laid out. What used to be Hole #1 is #10., and #10, is #1.

Former champions like Phil Mahone and Ty Grove will be competing in the three-day tournament....which is part of the Battle Trophy Championship.

Summers say, "We have a core group of people who play in all the local competitive events, but I really want to reach out to the mid-to-high handicapper, to let them know that this is not just about the low handicap folks. We flight the tournament, so even if you think you're not good enough, you can win your flight."
