VDOT Proposes Grouping Hillsdale Dr. Project with Rt. 29 Improvements

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday, the city of Charlottesville is considering a proposal from the Virginia Department of Transportation regarding the Hillsdale Drive Project. The project aims to extend Hillsdale Drive in order to improve access to existing and future businesses in the area as well as provide an alternative to the Route 29 corridor for local traffic.

VDOT has proposed grouping the project in with a package of other Route 29 improvements approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board last month. VDOT says this would make it easier to get all of the projects done smoothly and on time.

"In terms of the administration and management of the contracts, VDOT would only be dealing with one potential contract group,” said VDOT spokesperson Lou Hatter. "It offers some benefits and some efficiencies in terms of scheduling the work, coordinating the work.”

If Charlottesville agrees, the administration of the Hillsdale Drive project, which the city has been planning for years, would transfer to VDOT.
