Girls Enjoy Traditionally Male-Dominated Camp Class

Posted: Updated:

“Learning can be fun” is a summer camp offered by Blue Ridge Community College introducing kids to a variety of things from the arts to outdoor adventures. The class that fills up the fastest is Lego robotics, but you won't see many girls sign up.

In the sea of boys, there are just three girls.

Camp programmer Sandi Belcher says girls often choose art-related classes, but that she’s noticed more girls becoming interested in robotics. “Little girls can be just as creative in that way and think technically and do those things every bit as well as a boy can,” Belcher said.

Eme Hoylman, one of the three girls in the class, plans to take what she's learning and share it with her younger brothers. “I love the technology because of what it can do,” she said.

Lego robotics is filled up, but other classes still have room next week. Click here to see the schedules.
