Burchardt Sentenced for Burglaries in Albemarle

Posted: Updated:

A serial burglar, already sentenced to nearly a century behind bars for burglaries across central Virginia, learned his fate Tuesday for the crimes he committed in Albemarle County.

A judge sentenced Kevin Burchardt to a total of 30 years and six months. That's on top of the already 88 years he's been sentenced in other jurisdictions, but he’ll serve those sentences concurrently.

Burchardt sat down with NBC29 before his sentencing and explained that all of this boiled down to a mental health issue that got out of hand.

In court Tuesday, he apologized for his actions. He also said he would give anything to give his victims their items and sense of security back.

But one victim, Vickie Walker, whose husband Burchardt held at gunpoint says the apology and the sentence just aren't enough.

"I'm really disappointed in the courts. Yes he already had 88 years but he did the crimes in Albemarle County. He doesn't deserve to run them concurrent; he deserves the sentence because he did the crimes in Albemarle County. He doesn't need that leniency,” said Walker.

In his statement, Burchardt also asked the judge for leniency saying he was a “gentle giant.”

Burchardt will also have to pay restitution of nearly $23,000 to victims in Albemarle.
