Police ID Victim in Albemarle Motorcycle Crash

Albemarle police have identified the Waynesboro woman killed in a motorcycle crash on July Fourth.

Forty-nine-year-old Sharon Elizabeth McGaughey went off the road and hit a tree on Browns Gap Turnpike in Albemarle County. She was riding a Kawasaki Vulcan 900.

Investigators say rider inexperience was a factor in the crash.

The Fatal Crash Reconstruction Team of the Albemarle County Police Department is investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred today, July 4th at 3:02 PM.

The crash involved a single motorcycle with one rider. Preliminary evidence reveals the motorcycle was traveling South on Browns Gap Turnpike in the Western part of Albemarle County when the motorcycle ran off the right side of the roadway in the 3000 block. The motorcycle then struck a tree.

The rider, a 49 year old female from Waynesboro, Virginia, died at the scene. The name of the deceased is not being released until family members can be notified.

Rider inexperience appears to be a factor in the crash.
