Independence Day 5K in Albemarle County Benefits Camp Holiday Trails
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
Hundreds of runners in Albemarle County pounded the pavement to show their patriotism Friday morning.
The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville and Charlottesville Track Club teamed up to host the 31st Annual Independence Day 5K in the Forest Lakes North Subdivision. About 250 people laced up to race and raise money for Camp Holiday Trails.
"A lot of people get up today and we actually had about 80 race-day registrants out of that group because they get up. They know the weather is going to be fine and just want to come out and celebrate and burn some calories," said race co-director, Matthew Haas.
Organizers expect to raise about $5,000 through this year's event for the camp for chronically ill children. More than $115,000 has been donated to the charity over the last three decades.
