Albemarle Police Provide Fourth of July Traffic Safety Tips

Posted: Updated:

Fireworks are just one of the safety risks people face over the Fourth of July weekend. Travel and alcohol use both go up over the holiday - and that can be a deadly combination.

It is easy to get caught up in celebrations over the Fourth of July weekend, but Albemarle County police want to remind drivers to put safety first as they hit the road.

During Fourth of July weekend last year, seven people died in traffic accidents across Virginia. State troopers arrested over 100 people for drunk driving and cited over 11,000 motorists for speeding.

In Albemarle County, police spokesperson Carter Johnson says you can expect to see a notable increase of police this weekend.

“With more traffic and a lot of people celebrating the holiday, that can be a dangerous and even a deadly combination and we want to make sure people are taking the proper precautions for their safety and the safety of other people traveling during the weekend and of course our officers will be looking out for any impaired driver,” said Johnson.

There were only two arrests for drunk driving last year in Albemarle County and Johnson says that is two too many.

With Hurricane Arthur rolling in, road conditions are almost certain to worsen. Johnson encourages travelers to buckle up and not to drink and drive. Most of all, stay alert and prepare for delays.
