Nate Irving was drafted in the 34th round by Arizona
UVa catcher Nate Irving has become the fifth Cavalier baseball player to sign with a Major League team this offseason, as the junior came to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a minor league contract Wednesday.
Irving was a 34th round selection of the D'Backs in the MLB draft last month.
He batted .242 this year, with eighteen RBI and nineteen runs scored.
Irving started the majority of the games behind the plate for Virginia, helping the Wahoos' pitching staff post a 2.23 ERA as a team.
Mike Papi is the only junior remaining in UVa's eight-man draft class, and the first-round selection is in Cleveland working out the details with the Indians.
The junior batted .307 with a team leading eleven home runs for Virginia this season.
Seniors Artie Lewicki and Whit Mayberry were both drafted by the Tigers.
The final day to sign is July 18th.
