Albemarle Supervisors Approve Pay Raise for Public Defenders
Albemarle County Board of Supervisors
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
Public defenders in Albemarle County are getting a pay raise. The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors voted four to one to move around $80,000 toward raising their salaries.
This comes after defenders complained they were receiving 25 percent less than their prosecuting counterparts.
Ken Boyd was the only supervisor that voted against the motion. He says these are state employees, and providing them extra funding sets a bad precedent.
"They establish a public defender’s office, and then they don't adequately pay them, and then they look to the county to supplement that pay. We do this with the sheriff, we do this with the commonwealth's attorney and I'm just really tired of us having to pick up the tab for state-established offices,” Boyd said.
Boyd thinks the defenders should be taking their problem up with the state legislature. He says the problem will continue if not checked at the county level.
