Stuarts Draft Soccer Prom Benefits Boys and Girls Club
A unique fundraiser is benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County.
Soccer players got all dolled up like they're going to prom to play each other on the field at Stuarts Draft High School.
Executive Director Tyrell Mcelroy says the event is a creative way to get families to come out for a good cause.
The boys and girls club has done several fundraiser's in the past, but this is a first.
Mcelroy says his development director is an avid soccer player and came up with the idea.
They've raised more than $8,000.
That money is going toward the club's healthy lifestyles programming which offers sports and cooking classes to keep kids healthy.
"We get the same people that come out to our events and so we were trying to make sure that we were able to do something that kind of piqued the interest of the community and also brought out the kids, because we wanted to make sure the kids could be involved in our fundraising efforts as well,” said Mcelroy.
The game pitted the blue team against the white team, which are the club's colors.
The club exceeded its goal Saturday with the prom soccer.
Organizers plan to put together more creative fundraiser's in the future.
