Mondy sinks a six-foot put to win the 101st VSGA Amateur
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
Jake Mondy won the 101st VSGA Amateur championship and his second VSGA Amateur title in three years Saturday at Spring Creek Golf Club.
Mondy led Richmond's Jordan Utley by four after the first eighteen but gave up that lead after the next fourteen holes.
On the 36th hole, Mondy recovered by sinking a six-foot birdie to win the tournament.
Jake Mondy talked about his big put to win the Amateur, "They always say a good put to win is a down hiller because all you have to do is get it started. And that's kind of what I was thinking, I just got it started just on the right edge, and it fell right in the middle. To be honest with you I kind of blacked out there for a second. It was pretty cool to see that ball disappear and turn around and see my mom on the other side of the green."
Utley reacted to coming back from 4-down, "I knew I had a potential chance to win and that's what you want to be in. When you stand in the first tee box on Tuesday morning for the tournament, yeah you want to have a chance to win on the back nine, and I did."
