Augusta Making Plans for Old Ladd Elementary Property

Augusta County is in the early stages of plans to sell the property of the old Ladd Elementary School, which closed its doors last spring after nearly five decades.

While some zoning issues stand in the way, it looks like some major new shopping options could be in store for the property. The county has entered into a contract with a Maryland developer.

“The property really became surplus and the county was looking for a way to generate some revenue to fund some technology programs in the Augusta County school system,” said Amanda Glover, Augusta County’s economic developer.

The school's been closed for a year now but its location right across from a busy Waynesboro shopping center has city officials excited.

“Another 13 acres of commercial property out there, that's a really successful area, we see that as being positive for the developer and whatever retailers may end up there,” said Greg Hitchin, Waynesboro’s economic developer.

First, there are a few things that need to happen. The property is currently zoned as residential, but city officials are working to get that switched. “Our goal as a city would be to have mostly commercial there - the retail, food, service, lodging,” Hitchin said.

The developer has six months to inspect the building and work out the zoning issues but all indications are that progress is a go.

The county is expecting to have the sale completed by the end of the year. The county will make four-point-four million dollars off this sale.
