UVa's Ji Soo Park Falls in VSGA Amateur Quarterfinals
Ji Soo Park lost on the second playoff hole in the VSGA Amateur quarterfinals
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Virginia rising senior Ji Soo Park lost to Bryce Chalkley on the 20th hole of their match in the quarterfinal round of the VSGA Amateur Friday at Spring Creek Golf Course.
Park was 1-down to Chalkley with two holes to play, but the former Hokie bogeyed the par-3 17th hole to bring the match to All Square.
Park and Chalkley both parred 18 and the first playoff hole, but Park put his approach shot in a hazard behind the green on the 563-yard par-5 second, effectively ending his day.
Park had played for the Amateur championship twice previously, and was hoping to get back to the final day of play against this year.
"We play here for qualifying rounds as a team, so this is kind of our home course," says Park. "I really wanted to go final round and win the tournament here, but I guess it didn't happen, again. I'm kinda disappointed."
The rising senior says the summer tournament suits his game.
"College tournaments and amateur tournaments like this are a little bit different," says Park.
He added, with a smile, "My coach always says, 'Why don't you play like you do in the VSGA Amateur? You always play good there,' and I guess I don't play as well in the college tournaments. My coaches kind of get mad at stuff, so I think it's different."
Chalkley lost 7&6 against Jake Mondy in the semifinals, while Jordan Utley beat Vincent Nadeau 6&4.
Mondy and Nadeau will play a 36-hole final round Saturday at 7:30 AM.
